Baugruppe Jalousiefabrik is a community-led transformation of a historic courtyard ensemble in Berlin-Kreuzberg, structured to support long-term adaptability, collective agency, and ecological responsibility. The project reactivates a war-damaged front house and a former industrial rear factory through adaptive reuse and careful densification, restoring the street façade while preserving the loft-like spatial generosity of the Hinterhaus. Flexible floorplates and a participatory development process allow residents to shape their homes and shared spaces over time, balancing individual autonomy with collective decision-making. Climate resilience is embedded through a low-energy strategy combining heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, hybrid timber construction, and the reuse of existing structures and materials. Courtyards, green façades, and small commercial spaces anchor the project within its neighbourhood, reinforcing social embeddedness while designing the building as a durable, reversible framework capable of change beyond its initial use.
