Artist House

Artist House is situated in Lower Clapton in the London Borough of Hackney. This extension to the existing house was commissioned by Laure Provoust, the Turner Prize winning contemporary artist who works through narratives over several mediums.

The design of the extension is largely influenced by the irregularity of the existing Victorian house. Situated in the junction of two terraced roads and their differing scale of houses, this in-between site, results in an odd plan without a single straight angle to align the new built structures onto.
The facade was extended upwards with recycled bricks to diffuse the seam between old and the new floors. A new copper roof is folded over a light wooden structure to cover the new roof which will gradually change colour over time. Copper is a material which has a long life and works well with the environment. Externally it is used as a cladding of the building and inside the house as exposed pipework, both dealing with directing water either away or into the building.
In addition of constructing to improve or modernising old building fabric in London, we have continued to keep the carbon footprint low by using recycled and leftover construction materials where possible. Untreated soft wood is used for the furniture and fittings. The French balcony doors opening towards the south brings in light to the living area. The light continues to shine through the internal glazing to the bathroom, giving the possibility to catch a ray of sunshine or look out towards the gardens directly from the shower.
